Hello! My name is Kathryn Mullins and I am currently a second year Master of Occupational Therapy student at University of Health Science Center in Memphis, TN. I was born and raised in Jackson, TN and I received a bachelor's of science in psychology from Harding University prior to starting OT school.
I learned about what occupational therapy was from my aunt who is a practicing OT as well as hearing my grandfathers story. My grandfather had a stroke when he was in his early 50's which resulted in hemiplegia on the right side of his body. He received a lot of rehabilitative therapy post-stroke, but the therapy that made the biggest difference in his life was occupational therapy. His occupational therapist helped him adapt tasks in order to help him be as independent as possible for as long as possible. I decided I wanted to be an occupational therapist after hearing the impact that OT had on my grandfather. Occupational therapy is unique because it meets the person where they are at. No matter what physical, emotional, or mental ailment that someone is going through, occupational therapy can benefit them in many ways. OT is committed to looking at each person holistically and helping them be as healthy and independent as possible in order to improve their quality of life. Occupational therapy has a wide range of services it can offer such as strengthening & mobility training, task adaptation, environmental adaptation, sensory regulation techniques, adaptive equipment needs, and so many more. I have learned so much about different areas of occupational therapy as well as OT in general since starting school a few years ago. My biggest interests are in orthopedic rehabilitation, pelvic health therapy, women's health, and NICU therapy. OT is unique because it provides so many different specialty areas which is really exciting to me. Although these areas interest me the most right now, I have an open mind and I am looking forward to learning about more areas that I could pursue once I start my career as an OT. |
